However, it is relatively simple to increase capacity by 30-50% at very low or zero cost through the application of two simple business improvement techniques called SMED (Single Minute Exchange of Die) and TPM (Total Productive Maintenance).

SMED aims to reduce changeover times between jobs by re-locating tooling, minimising handling and implementing simple visual control mechanisms that also reduce management effort. TPM aims to reduce machine downtime by identifying correct cleaning and servicing processes. Both SMED & TPM can be implemented by shopfloor staff following some introductory training and possibly some outside support.
