The Government believes manufacturing companies need to turn to their advantage the twin challenges of technological change and the increasing openness of world markets.
To help manufacturers do this, the DTI's strategy for manufacturing usefully sets out the current UK manufacturing position and trends, and takes into account views received from major interested parties, such as CBI, Regional Development Agencies (RDAs) and Trade Unions. It also presents measures and intended targets for the Manufacturing Advisory Service. Now the DTI is working with the RDAs and other key stakeholders to develop the national framework into the regional and local action needed by manufacturers.
Against this backdrop, a new annual trade event, Manufacturer 2002, boasts the most impressive line-up of new initiatives and value-adding activities ever assembled for manufacturing executives in the UK. The inaugural show will be held at the International Centre in Telford, September 25 and 26.
Designed to demonstrate and encourage world-class practices, applicable to all sizes of business, activities for visitors to Manufacturer 2002 range from senior management master classes to personalised company benchmarking.
New products, innovative techniques and methodologies will all be on show.
Manufacturing champion Sir John Harvey-Jones has agreed to join the founding members of the Manufacturing Alliance, an elite new networking and lobbying forum to be launched at Manufacturer 2002. That launch will follow a breakfast debate on the condition of UK Manufacturing plc hosted by Radio 4's John Humphrys and involving a number of big hitters from government and industry.
The exhibition hall is to feature strong commercial presence of sector-leading companies like Microsoft Business Solutions, and will also play host to the Manufacturing Advisory Service, the Institute of Directors, Trade Partners UK and, in the Manufacturing Campus area, universities such as Cranfield and Liverpool.
Delegates who pre-register to attend Manufacturer 2002, will also receive, along with their show catalogue, a free copy of a brand new piece of research, the Manufacturing Attitudes Report, examining UK manufacturers' attitudes to the euro, government performance, and overseas threats.
