rollers for crushing glass; and hot forging for the automotive industry.

Hycore operates at lower temperatures than other gaseous nitriding techniques. This means that extremely high surface hardness can be achieved with lower distortion levels on materials of a high alloy type, such as hot-working steels.

Work on the new process began as part of the continual development of services for the three major customers.

Despite the differences in the applications, all the specifications required higher than normal surface hardness, with a high core backing, together with the usual advantages, such as corrosion resistance and improved fatigue properties.

The Hycore project is the 18th in a series of registered processes developed during the past 25 years by the Liverpool based company.

Overseas intellectual property rights for the previous 17 processes were sold at the end of last year to the industrial gases giant, BOC.
