Mr Gallon, whose Finnish parent company has invested heavily in a Tested Systems division which supplies packaged control units, feels that equipment and systems manufacturers who do subcontract their control units need to think carefully about suitability of parts and compliance with new manufacturing standards.

It pays to select a control systems subcontractor who can demonstrate suitable sector experience. In house software expertise and comprehensive testing facilities are key, as well as being able to provide adequate installation, operation and maintenance manuals. Above all, subcontractors should be able to demonstrate compliance with all current manufacturing and operation standards; as a minimum.

Finally, equipment labelling should specify the company responsible for its operation. If manufacturing is outsourced, labelling must also include the name and details of the manufacturer of the control unit, in order to clarify any liability issues.
