Managing director Charles Sanders comments: "We're very excited about this 'new'machine, it's a rare Delapena HHM20 originally constructed in the mid 1970's for the Gloucester based 'Honing & Tubes' group. After Honing & Tubes closed in the late 1990's it was sold onto a company in Birmingham who specialised in chrome plated cylinder bores. We've now obtained the solidly built machine. It's presently receiving a major overhaul and should be fully operational and available for new contract honing work by the end of September."
Apperley Honing have capacity to hone bores from 3mm to 750mm diameter and in lengths up to 9m, and are regularly asked to hone the bores of unusual components mainly for the marine, pharmaceutical and petrochemical industries.
One recent job involved receiving a 635mm diameter x2000mm long cylinder to clean up the bore surface finish. The cylinder was being salvaged and had had around 6mm thickness of Inconel 625 weld cladding applied throughout the i/d of the cylinder.
Apperley had to remove all the high spots and hone through the rough patches of the weld to clean the bore, increasing the diameter by around 3mm in the process. The end result was an Inconel 625 lined cylinder with a smooth, blemish free, 0.4micromRa surface finish that was suitable for many more years' arduous service.
