Following news of the breakdown in talks between MG Rover Group and SAIC, and the announcement by Trade and Industry Secretary Patricia Hewitt, the entire industry is united in extending thoughts to the many thousands of people employed at the Longbridge car plant, the companies involved in the supply chain and retailers throughout the UK.

We very much hope there will be a future for these two historic brands. However, the car industry has become increasingly global and this shows how difficult it can be for manufacturers to thrive in a competitive market, without the significant investment and cost benefits that come from strategic partnerships.

Note: SMMT is represented on the Rover Task Force by Industry Forum chief executive Graham Broome, and the sub-group on dealer operations by SMMT chief executive Christopher Macgowan.
