Fast-Hole EDM & Wire Turning Compliment Precision Line-up
01 Jul 2006
Merc Engineering has improved its core CNC milling and turning business by installing an Astec FastHole Driller which is faster and more powerful than existing machines. The company's EDM department comprising of spark erosion, wire erosion and fast-hole drilling has fast become an integral part of its range of services. Further, Merc is now keen to work with customers to make EDM 'Wire Turning' an ongoing success.
The new machine drills precision holes in the range 0.1mm diameter to 6mm diameter. Merc is achieving length to diameter ratios of up to 200:1 on a regular basis. The company feels that the sustained investment in EDM has allowed it to compete more effectively, either as a single-source sub-contract operation, or by offering the final EDM operation on a component or sub-assembly.
Exploiting EDM to the full, in addition to its standard wire and spark erosion services, Merc has recently developed a wire turning process that uses a high-speed spindle and allows for machining of intricate profiles in exotic, normally difficult-to-machine materials. The wire turning facility enables production of small, tightly toleranced turned parts, and is particularly useful on hardened components and where component push-off would normally be an issue.
Merc Engineering is a world class precision engineering company producing high quality precision parts for a wide variety of industries.
