Export Targets Widen for North-West Contractor
01 Nov 2006
Recently back from Berlin trade fair Innotrans, the team at Lancashire based precision machining and welding company Merc Engineering UK Ltd are currently gearing themselves up for their next slice of success in the world of export. Following their attendance at the German exhibition, the company is now talking to several potential new clients, particularly in the rail industry.
Working closely with advisors from UK Trade & Investment Merc has benefited from pinpointed training, in order to ease its employees smoothly into export. Operations manager Jon Hoyle said: “The trip to Berlin was a success, and we are currently chasing numerous interesting leads. As always we are confident that the engineering on offer at Merc is the best in the business, and our new clients can see that.”
Whilst the 30% growth of the last year is fuelling the company as it tackles new markets, Merc’s directors are keen not to be complacent about the future. Mr Hoyle added: “Our existing customers in aerospace and defence are keen to watch us grow and diversify, but they still demand the same level of service they have grown accustomed to. With outside help, we are therefore going through a valuable continuous improvement exercise, analysing our process controls and ensuring that our place in the supply chain remains safeguarded for the future.”
An integral factor in sustaining this growth is the implementation of a Lean Manufacturing initiative that has allowed company personnel to maintain control during the expansion period. Initially a Merc in-house project, the inclusion of the team in a larger customer-led Supply Chain Grouping activity has helped to formalise forward planning to the benefit of all its customers.
