Britain came perilously close to running out of natural gas in March this year. The Energy Intensive Users Group (EIUG) is demanding urgent action to prevent gas supplies running out this winter. With no quick and easy solutions to high energy prices in the short term, Hugh Mortimer commercial manager of utilities at BOC Process Gas Solutions (BOC and now part of The Linde Group), urges fellow customers to lobby hard to stop UK energy prices becoming ever less competitive.
EU Funding for Laser Materials Processing Research to Benefit SMEs

TWI (The Welding Institute) is interested in forming partnerships with groups of SMEs, and larger organisations, to establish new research projects in the area of laser materials processing. The collaborative (usually three-year) projects will have funding support from the European Commission.
UK is Global Hotspot For Wave And Tidal Stream Energy Sector

The Carbon Trust has launched the Marine Energy Accelerator (MEA), a major new initiative to bring new ideas and skills to the marine renewable energy sector, accelerating its development towards commercial viability. The project will involve device developers and component technology manufacturers working with engineering consultants, contractors and academic research groups. Up to £3.5m of support will be available for the project and activities are expected to start later this financial year.
