Hutchinson boosts laser power

To help cope increasing demand, Coleraine-based Hutchinson Engineering has installed an 4kW Amada CNC laser cutting machine with automated loading and unloading – and it will soon take delivery of another.

Although established for 35 years, originally to meet the fabrication needs of the local agricultural industry, demand for the company’s services in recent times has been driven by the commercial vehicle market. Here, Hutchinson has developed a strong niche supplying parts such as chassis brackets for coaches.

The company has been running Amada lasers since 1999 and thanks to the flexibility of these machines has also been able to cut non-metallic parts too.

“Coach interior lining parts are typically manufactured from 2mm thick Formica,” explains Mr Hutchinson. “This material is traditionally processed by woodworking shops using routing techniques. However, because the Amada machines feature roller beds, materials that require high aesthetics can be laser cut without the risk of surface scratches, at a much faster rate.”

Hutchinson Engineering will run the new machines 24 hours a day, says general manager Mark Hutchinson.

“Running around the clock is vital to the success of our business,” he says. “It’s a very competitive industry so anything we can do to differentiate ourselves in the marketplace can only be beneficial.”
