IET Faraday forges forward
04 Jun 2007
The IET Faraday 2008 will be launched this autumn with a number of short dynamic films to drive interest, create enthusiasm and stimulate the desire to know more about this year’s theme, ‘engineering in health’.
The Faraday Lecture, one of the Institution’s most popular and successful schools activities is set to change later this year.
‘The IET Faraday’ will be a more accessible, year long resource available globally to all schools. Engagement with young people, teachers and parents will be maximised through a programme of specially made films, student challenges, live events, school visits and teaching resources, underpinned by a high quality, interactive website.
One of the reasons the Faraday has remained successful is that it has evolved to reflect the changing world of engineering and the requirements of schools. This latest development comes at a time when the teaching of science, engineering and technology is changing dramatically, with greatly increased emphasis on practical activities.
The IET is responding to research which indicates the need for innovative, motivating, engaging, challenging and readily accessible teacher resources. The availability of more hands-on, interactive experiences, with multi-level access points is seen to be the key to engaging students of all abilities in engineering related subjects.
Challenges introduced through the films will illustrate the subject matter through real-life practical examples. Students will be invited to take part in the challenges and support will be provided by newly appointed Faraday Ambassadors, specially trained IET members, who will visit selected schools.
Live events will take place at subject-related venues and will be a celebration of the achievements of students, showcasing their solutions to the challenges. Although fewer live events will be staged than in previous years, a more creative and exciting programme of activities available to a significantly larger audience will be developed.
Throughout the year, a portfolio of specially developed teacher support materials will be made available to enhance the delivery of high quality science, engineering and technology lessons. The new Faraday website will be the access point to these resources.
We welcome the support of Business Partners and we look forward to working with interested companies. Industry involvement is crucial if we are to include positive messages about the many rewarding and worthwhile career opportunities available in the engineering profession. Inspiring role models will reinforce the image of engineering as an exciting and varied career choice, while highlighting its vital contribution to society.
The Institution’s Education 5-19 Department and members of the Board of Trustees have worked together to develop this innovative programme, ensuring that the IET Faraday is a first class, fit for purpose activity of real relevance to the current needs of schools.
