REACH requires the comprehensive review and approval of chemicals in everything from pens to computers. This regulation affects anyone producing, importing or using products in the EU. The aim is to ensure that human health and the environment is safeguarded, while enhancing innovation and industrial competitiveness.
Within 18 months, companies must be sure that all relevant chemical products are identified and recorded with a central European Chemicals Agency in Helsinki.
Commenting on today’s milestone CIA Chief Executive Steve Elliott said “Although the clock has started ticking, chemical businesses have been preparing for REACH for some time now. Indeed, the industry continues to work hard with officials, NGOs and others on the current REACH Implementation Projects which are looking in detail at how the legislation will work in practice.”
“REACH presents significant challenges for makers, importers and users of chemicals – a fact I see every day by the nature and number of the enquiries and related support offered by CIA’s REACHReady business.”
“For its own sake industry must make REACH a success - its reputation and commercial viability relies on it and society demands it. That said, success will in large part also be determined by the approach taken by EU member state governments and regulators whom we urge to implement REACH in a pragmatic and consistent manner, underpinned by fair and rigorous enforcement across the EU.”
