Massive investments have already been made in the past two years two at Merc. In addition to new departments offering EDM services and TIG welding, significant additions have also been made to CNC turning and milling; most recently came a pair of Doosan twin-spindle twin-turret lathes along with three Dah Lih high speed vertical machining centres.

Company boss Les Nuttall has been keen however to control this rapid growth and has recently launched his version of an in-house corporate transformation plan, embracing the ideals of Lean Manufacturing in conjunction with the Investors in Excellence model. Says Mr Nuttall: “The principles of Lean are nothing new to our workforce, however we are now trying to streamline our entire way of working looking at processes and systems, through to management structure and style.”

Mr Nuttall hopes the move will provide the necessary drive to push the company towards its target status as a World Class Manufacturer, enabling it to provide its customers with the best product and service possible, and secure the company’s place in the future precision market.
