  • Meet French subcontractors at Subcon 2008

    Visitors to the French Pavilion at Subcon 2008, which runs at the NEC Birmingham from 22 to 24 April, will have the chance to meet representative from 16 leading subcontractors – and also have the chance to win some French Champagne. 

  • Eurofighter work for Burdon Engineering

    Stokesley-based precision engineering company Burdon Engineering has won a five-year contract worth £4m to provide components for Messier-Dowty for use on the Typhoon Eurofighter. 

  • New MD for Jordan Engineering

    Gateshead-based precision engineering firm, Jordan Engineering, has appointed a new managing director following the loss of its owner Bryan Jordan who died in December after a long battle with cancer. Bryan’s son, Peter Jordan, 32, takes over the role this month and will build on the solid foundations built by his father. 

  • Protomold on board with new craze

    German ‘mountain board’ manufacturer Flame Offroadboards is using services provided by rapid injection-moulding specialist Protomold to help convert this rapidly growing sporting phenomenon into the world’s most in-vogue outdoor pursuits accessory.

    MTL Group Limited, the Sheffield based contract manufacturing company has been named “Company of the Year” 2008 by the Northern Defence Industries (NDI).The award recognises the company’s investment and successful growth over the last two years.

  • Pressing down costs

    Southampton-based Simplefit says it can save customers about 75% on the unit cost of components by designing tooling that combines pressing, shear forming and piercing techniques to replace machining operations. The result is major cost savings on long term products. 

  • Savekers turn up the heat on tube work

    Savekers, a long-established Birmingham manufacturer of bespoke and standard metalwork and joinery, has boosted its subcontracting business by investing £655,000 in a Trumpf Tru Laser Tube 5000 laser. The investment was made possible with the help of a £90,000 SFIE (Selective Finance for Investment in England) grant from regional development agency Advantage West Midlands. 

  • Rapid prototyping in the frame

    Prototal AB, a leading Swedish prototyping and part production company, has used stereolithography to produced a fully functional model of a new FLIR infra-red camera for testing and customer approval. It produced numerous iterations of the design, taking just two days for each model.   

  • Filters made to measure from Tecan

    Cost-effective single-part metal filters can be tailor-made for a diverse range of applications using Photo Electro Forming (PEF) and Photo Chemical Machining (PCM), says Tecan. Examples range from inkjet nozzles to audio baffles, light filters to particle characterisation screens.   

  • China sourcing is a hot topic for Hamworthy

    Leading commercial boiler manufacturer Hamworthy Heating will be sharing the lessons it has learnt in successfully sourcing low-volume components from China as part of the Subcon 2008 free seminar programme. The presentation, entitled “Building supplier relationships in China” is part of a series of specially commissioned presentations for visitors to the show.     

  • NPL notes upturn in UK foundry business

    NPL Technologies, which provides prototype and production tooling services to the foundry industry, has recently seen a 30% increase in business from UK-based foundries, following several years in which its foundry tooling business declined to a low level.   

  • Acquisition will create major new machining subcontractor

    Responsive Engineering has acquired Exact Engineering and created a new company Exact Machining UK Ltd which will join forces with Responsive’s existing precision machining subsidiary Kingsway. 

  • Companies join forces to create new machining subbie

    Teknek Howwood, the subcontracting division of Glasgow-based Teknek and Blantyre-based precision engineering company Fortec have joined forces to create Metallo, a new company offering turning, milling and horizontal and vertical boring. 

  • Exports boost Craftsman’s record turnover

    Strong export sales particularly to the US and Ireland have helped Craftsman Tools boost its annual turnover to record levels to a record £6 million, an increase of 30 per cent on the previous year and well ahead of schedule. 

  • New machining business for low to medium volumes

    Matco, a new, Midlands-based parts machining business believes it has spotted at gap in the market for  a machining company willing to work in partnership with customers to offer and end-to-end service on low to medium volume parts. 

  • China and India may not be the right answer

    Many firms are failing to establish effective global production networks and rely too heavily on short-term outsourcing and offshoring to countries such as India and China, says Paul Christodoulou of Cambridge University Institute for Manufacturing (IfM).
