SprintTM Composite Runs Away with Product Award

Developments in the application of advanced composite materials were recognised on 4 January when SP Systems won the British Nautical Award for Marine Product of the Year. The composite engineering materials specialist from the Isle of Wight combines skills in materials science, structural design and process engineering to make structures lighter, stronger and stiffer.

In the 1980's SP Systems was instrumental in changing the prime raceboat building materials from aluminium and conventional glassreinforced plastic to advanced composites. From its original marine customer base, the company has expanded into other areas including wind turbines, passenger vehicles, fire & blast protection systems, subsea structures, bridges, stage sets and lightweight building components.

'Sprint' materials consist of dry fibre reinforcements, into which a thin precatalysed resin film has been inserted. Air is extracted before a heat process, which softens the resin allowing it to flow into the air-free reinforcement. The process produces composite components with high mechanical properties, very low void content, and excellent surface finish, rapidly and economically.
