Surface Treatment And Finishing

Electropolishing Steels the Show at Southern

Anopol South, based in Bordon, Hampshire, exhibited examples of the diverse range of stainless steel components which benefit from the company's sub-contract finishing treatments.

Stainless steel is widely specified for its corrosion resistance but contamination from manufacturing processes such as welding, forming, grinding or heat treatment alter the metallurgical structure of the surface layer which can cause corrosion.

Pickling of stainless steel gives a clean, uniform surface with a matt grey finish. Surface contaminants, such as weld oxide discolouration, are effectively removed, allowing an uninterrupted passive layer to form which is essential for corrosion resistance.

The electropolishing treatments carried out by the company give components the optimum surface finish, greatly reducing the risk of corrosion and also enhancing the appearance. The micro-smooth surface, with an excellent passive film, has the true qualities of a contamination-free stainless steel.

This not only reduces the likelihood of corrosion but it is also stress-free and much easier to clean.

Anopol South processes components for many industries including marine, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, automotive, nuclear, textiles, aerospace and electronics. Perhaps the ultimate accolade is that the treatment is used on virtually all stainless steel surgical products from miniature stents in heart operations to cutting and grinding instruments for bone surgery.
