CNC Machining Steps Up Component Complexity

Hampshire's Gravatom Engineering Systems Ltd (GESL) has enhanced its component manufacturing capabilities with the addition of four state of the art CNC machines.

GESL, the largest unit within the Gravatom Group of companies, designs, manufactures and commissions engineering solutions throughout the world. Based in Bishops Waltham, Hampshire, the company has more than 30 years experience serving the OEM, nuclear and pharmaceutical sectors. The Group also comprises: Gravatom Finishing Ltd, Gravatom Distribution Ltd and Virotec Ltd.

The fully programmable XYZ machines - two vertical bed mills, a turret mill and a lathe - are the largest in the range in order to give greatest flexibility. In addition to the machinery, GESL has also invested in off line programming facilities to ensure maximum machine utilisation time.

The new CNC machines enable the company to undertake one off and small batch production runs in the quickest, most efficient manner. The high spindle speeds on the milling machines allied with high power and variable speeds allow for the latest cutter technologies to be applied to plastics, aluminium, mild and stainless steel, producing superior finishes in a fraction of the time.

The company now plans to integrate its existing VISI CAD/CAM manufacturing software package to allow more complex items to be manufactured efficiently and also offer a rapid prototype service.
