Levels of Stock and Satisfaction Monitored
01 Apr 2003
Abingdon-based Holifields is one of the first contract machinists to achieve the new ISO9001:2000 quality standard. The company not only produces components but also stocks them free of charge for delivery when needed, just in time.
The new quality standard, which updates ISO9001:1994, and the discontinued ISO9002 or 9003, requires a more processes-based approach to management, linking business objectives with effectiveness more directly. Consequently, this requires analysis and improvement of customer satisfaction levels.
Holifields specialises in turning, prismatic machining, and water jet cutting, for the medical, Formula One, cryogenic, instrumentation and scientific sectors. The company has extended these services by offering a stocking and just in time delivery service.
Said Holifield's sales manager, Roy Marshall: "It costs us money to do this, but some of the expense is offset by the economy of machining larger batches. However, the most important consideration is keeping the customer happy. Many subcontractors can produce high precision machined parts, so consignment stocking gives us an edge."
For example, the shop floor staff at Holifield's customer Thames Cryogenics visually monitor component levels and call off further quantities as required. Most regularly used items can be delivered the same day.
