Training Underlines Supplier Competences

As part of its commitment to Modern Apprenticeships, Shearline Precision Engineering in Ely, Cambridgeshire, is sponsoring Witchford College's Design and Technology department which opened recently. 15% of the company's workforce represents home-grown talent and 22.3% of the engineers employed have come through the company's apprenticeship programme.

HR manager Sarah Heighes says: "Modern Apprenticeships have rewarded us with a significant number of highly skilled engineers trained to the requirements of the company. The apprenticeship programme is very worthwhile and beneficial to both the company and the individual and we are committed to employing a minimum number each and every year."

One of Shearline's CNC turning programmers was a finalist in the 2001 World Skills Olympics and was ranked 6th in the world for CNC turning programming and engineering.

Shearline operates from a showcase, efficient factory modelled along Japanese lines. It has won a string of top industry awards for a range of specialisms. The company has major clients in fields as diverse as inkjet printing, research and academia, medical and healthcare, scientific instrumentation, telecoms, security and technology consultancy.
