Spirit of Ecstasy Poses on Precise Machined Footing

Last month, DKW Engineering completed the machining of its first batch of 100 'Spirit of Ecstasy' castings for the new Rolls Royce plant in Chichester. It was DKW's in-depth knowledge of machining complex castings that first attracted Rolls Royce and Polycast (producers of the cast figurines), to the Portsmouth sited company for the precise machining of the famous Rolls Royce figurehead base.

From the initial discussions it was obvious that the key for success relied heavily upon establishing a reliable datum on the beautiful but complex female form. DKW produced a dedicated tooling and gauge system, for 'nesting' the casting during machining and for checking the alignment afterwards.

To become a Rolls Royce supplier, DKW had to demonstrate other key competences such as commitment to continuous improvement, and investment in people and skills. The company has invested more than 20% of its annual sales turnover on three new machine tools in the past 12 months, including a Nakumura Tome 7-axis turning centre.

DKW offers a full engineering service comprising CNC lathes and machining centres, conventional turning and milling machines, metal fabrication and welding. The company provides engineering services from tooling manufacture and development through to high volume batch work for a wide range of industries including aerospace, petrochemical, medical, as well as automotive.
