Moulds And Moulding

Disposable Laryngoscope Sheds Light on Success

'Mini' by name but not in nature, the past six months has seen a doubling of Minimould Ltd's turnover and almost the same increase in additional staff and shift hours. Part of the Buckinghamshire based company's success can be attributed to a proactive design and development approach that has led to working in partnership with medical clients, Penlon, on the only single piece disposable laryngoscope manufactured in the UK.

In the aftermath of the BSE crisis, surgeons need increasing quantities of disposable laryngoscopes, with good light refracting properties, to open patients' airways during operations.

Minimould's design and engineering team played a key role in the initial laryngoscope design, and are now helping to develop a product from a less brittle material.

Well established for over 20 years, Minimouldis business was built up from small, close tolerance, technical mouldings. In recent years the company expanded its capability into large commodity type work.

The comprehensive injection moulding facility is equipped with 17 moulding machines ranging from 7.5 to 480 tonnes, which can accommodate components weighing from 0.5g to 1.5kg.

Minimould also offers postmoulding services such as ultrasonic welding and assembly. The in-house tool room manufactures new mould tools and maintains all tooling used in the facility. The extent of thermoplastic materials processed on site range from common engineering polymers to the more exotic, such as Poly-sulphone, PEEK and liquid crystal polymers.
