'Going Green' Helps Bottom Line Profits
01 Mar 2003
Green engineering used to be thought of as not applicable to commercial organisations, that is until people realised that effective implementation can make a substantial difference to bottom line profits, says Mark Eaton, Head of the MAS (South East).
For example, it is not uncommon for annual savings to amount to £1,000 per employee, achieved through reducing packaging waste and energy costs and through minor redesigns that both reduce product costs and environmental impact.
Green engineering has many definitions, but can be thought of as the design and commercialisation of effective and viable products which also minimise pollution at source and which reduce the risk to human and environmental health.
Companies who don't go green will not only lose out on the substantial benefits that can be accrued, but will also be subject to increasing regulation and legislation.
Envirowise is a DTI funded programme to help companies reduce environmental impact through benchmarking, case studies and on-site advice. In addition, a number of other organisations employ specialist advisors who can work with companies during the design phase of a new product.
