Dryer Refurbishment
01 May 2003
The decision by Lafarge Aggregates to bring a major piece of equipment back into operation gave engineering company Ace Arc the opportunity to use all their welding and fabrication expertise.
The work involved the refurbishment and modification of a rotary dryer originally in use in East Anglia and its transportation and installation into Lafarge's asphalt plant at Graig Quarry, Clwyd.
Used to heat stone to make asphalt, the 2.5m x 14m long dryer drum, which is an integral part of the equipment, was adapted by Ace Arc to meet the specific requirements of the new site. After its collection from the storage site in East Anglia, the unit was fully inspected, overhauled and modified for its new role at Graig.
Although most of the work was carried out in Ace Arc's workshop in Coalville, Leicestershire, engineers also worked on site to dismantle the existing installation and replace it with the modified dryer.
Quarry manager Richard Sanderson said that although Ace Arc had been approached because they had done work for the company before, they won the pitch on the basis of their competitive quote and great flexibility.
