Managing Supply Chain Helped To Win Business
01 May 2003
Following a bold move to set up a dedicated production unit, within six weeks, to penetrate the aerospace and defence sector, Gateshead based Express Engineering has grown rapidly from being a traditional jobbing shop into a leading manufacturer of precision components to a customer base that includes Goodrich, Thales, BEA Systems and SAAB Bofors. A key factor in making this happen was the company's ability to pull together a powerful supply-chain.
"It was clear that the stringent systems and procedures adopted within the aerospace and defence sector were very different to those specified by other markets" explains Graeme Nicol, aerospace business director at Express. The company decided to penetrate the market by setting up a bespoke unit with carefully chosen staff who would be prepared to work in a new way, and also with selected suppliers as partners. The new unit needed brand new equipment, robust processes and supplier resources on site.
Express Engineering managed all was able to engage and enthuse its fellow suppliers to share its vision because it had been working in partnership with them for many years.
One such partnership was formed with the supplier DMG that saw the machine tool manufacturer offer innovative finance options and a commitment of shared risk in the short term with a view to becoming a long-term partner.
