Pig Launcher Project Pushed the Limits
01 May 2003
Leeds fabrication and machining engineers, A. Taylor and Son, have once again demonstrated their versatility with the recent completion of a 36 tonne vessel destined for Western Australia.
A. Taylor was commissioned by Pipeline Engineering, a global leader in the provision of pigging, isolation, joint testing and specialised services for the pipeline industry. The Launcher is a critical part of the LNG phase IV expansion project for Woodside Energy Ltd.
Pipeline pigging was originally used as a method of clearing debris from crude oil pipelines. Pigs act like a free moving piston inside a pipeline and can perform a number of other tasks including gauging the internal bore of the pipeline. Pig launchers are specially designed vessels with a quick opening closure for access, an oversized barrel, a reducer and a neck pipe for connection to the pipeline.
One of the longest fabrications manufactured by the company, the 15 metre long 'Pig Launcher' comprised seven large diameter rolled and welded barrels, constructed from 50 and 55mm thick special carbon steel. Uniquely, this high profile contract required complete manufacture in accordance with stringent Australian standards, and before commencing fabrication A.Taylor had to re-qualify its welders to strict technical codes.
The challenge didn't end there, as the company had little under five months to complete the project, and within this timescale were various subcontract processes. These included stress relieving in one of the countries largest furnaces, pressure testing to 213bar, and finally painting and packing for the six-week voyage by boat to Perth. The contract was successfully completed in 15 weeks, a major achievement by the project team.
The exciting times at A.Taylor continue as completion of their new 28,000ft 2additional factory gets nearer. The company has already commenced manufacture of stainless steel fabrications in the new building, together with the construction of major fabricated assemblies. Also well underway is the transfer of large machine tools, which is due for completion in May.
