Apprentices Achieve full IIE Membership

This summer saw the graduation of students from the new three-year Modern Apprenticeship courses that are approved by the Institution of Incorporated Engineers (IIE). Five of these graduates have received the best possible start to their engineering careers by becoming the first apprentices in Wales to achieve full membership of the IIE.

The IIE approved engineering degree courses are aimed specifically at meeting the needs of employers for individuals who can hit the road running and make an immediate contribution to the success of engineering businesses. All too often in the past employers have said that though their graduate recruits have been academically excellent, many do not have the practical skills to apply themselves without additional training.

However, the new three-year engineering degree courses (often called BEng or BScEng), forming the basis for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) registration with the Engineering Council (UK), now provide the ideal blend of technical and practical know how to cope with employer demands.

The five apprentices recently completed their training programmes through Training Services Wales (TSW) Ltd, the first Welsh training organisation to be approved by the IIE. This means that apprentices who qualify with TSW can now gain professional status with IIE as Engineering Technicians and are entitled to use the letters 'Eng. Tech.'after their names.
