Integrated Inspection Investment Pays Off
01 Apr 2004
The installation of a LaserQC at fine limit sheetmetal work and laser cutting specialist Carlton Laser Services (CLS) in Leicester has significantly reduced lead times. In minutes, the system performs 2-D inspections and produces printed sample inspection reports that would normally take hours. CLS is one of only a few laser job shops in the UK to integrate a LaserQC machine as part of its continuous improvement programme.
On a recent batch of aerospace components CLS's inspection scanner has reduced the lead time by half.
Batches of the 200mm x 25mm wide strips with 3000 cut holes, require 100% inspection of 3000 dimensions on each part. The inspection reports, which run into 30 pages per component, used to take longer to produce than the entire batch took to cut.
The system is accurate to +/- 0.05mm, and the equipment also can be used in a reverse-engineering mode when there is no DXF file available, saving hours of measurement and drawing. CLS is also offering its inspection services to other laser cutting contractors.
CLS has an automated laser cell with a laser and punch press running from the same system, which can be loaded with up to 80 tonnes of material for lights out running over 48 hours.
