Success Comes at a Price with a Skill Gap Challenge
01 Apr 2004
Stainless Metalcraft, Cambridge is a multi million pound business that is increasing in real terms year on year. Business expansion however comes at a price as recruitment of workers with the right skill levels presents an on-going challenge.
Metalcraft is the largest supplier of MRI scanner containment vessels in Europe servicing all the major MRI OEMs around the world. The firm advertises widely for staff and trains as many people through apprenticeships as is economically possible in an attempt to rectify the situation.
"Recruitment is a problem we would like to solve", says company spokesman Steve Hall. "We are looking far and wide for the right people, training up where possible and advertising vacancies in areas far outside the usual commuting distance."
To manufacture the large intricate components used in MRI scanners specialist skills and techniques have been developed and the company has made significant investments in the latest CNC machine tools which are operated day and night.
Mr Hall said that although the shortage of CNC machinists and skilled welders was a problem it was not having a significant effect on the business as the current workforce supported by selected sub-contractors were managing the workload.
