Many Companies Have a False Perception of Their Own Performance
01 Aug 2004
According to various surveys over the last few years, more than 80% of companies would class themselves as either 'world class' or 'excellent' when compared to both their domestic and international competitors.
However, reality checks undertaken by various researchers indicate that the real figure is actually less than 10%, says Mark Eaton, Director of the MAS (South East & London) for EEF South.
Ironically, companies who believe themselves to be 'top of class' often cease to innovate and stop looking for significant improvements in productivity - meaning they are not ready for changes in the market or the sometime rapid shifts in customer expectations.
The challenge for engineering is to avoid complacency through activities such as benchmarking, site visits or investing in training.
For example, IMECHE (Institute of Mechanical Engineers) runs a Manufacturing Excellence (MX) award scheme, which provides entrants with a benchmark, and winners with top quality awards that recognise 'excellence' in a wide range of business areas.
To take part in the MX awards for 2005, or for details of site visits you could attend in your area, contact the Manufacturing Advisory Service in the South East on 0845-609-2121 or email info@mas-se. org. uk, where the team can provide you support wherever you are located.
