It's Just Got Easier to be a Public Sector Supplier

The Government spends over £50 billion every year with businesses of all kinds, including engineering companies. This enormous market is predictable and secure, yet very difficult for small manufacturing companies to break into. However, the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS) can help companies who are prepared to invest the extra effort required to tender for public programmes, says Mark Eaton, Head of the MAS (South East & London), for EEF South.

In the past, companies seeking to work in the Government sector faced an uphill battle to be considered for the contracts put out to tender by Public Sector Authorities (PSAs) such as Local Government Authorities, Housing Associations and Police Forces.

Recently introduced initiatives such as Best Value and the Local Government Online Programme '2005 e-Government', aim to make the selection process more transparent. They also aim to establish standards and procedures that are accessible to even the smaller business.

Further, new Central Government regulations have put into place additional controls to scrutinise how PSAs select suppliers.

These checks or "accreditation standards" will be applied to all suppliers, whether existing or new.
