Contractor Buys OEM's £230k Machine at a Snip
01 Jan 2004
When a major jet engine manufacturer decided to shut down one of its production units, it needed to find a buyer for its Liefeld PNC110 machine that originally cost around £230k. Nigel Cousins, managing director of Metspin Ltd was quick to seize the opportunity to acquire additional specialized metal forming capability at an affordable price. Last month Metspin's PNC110 began full production, ironically for the same components that were originally being made on the machine by its previous owner.
This state of the art machine was specially commissioned, designed and built to form exotic materials widely used in aircraft engines, and is one of only three of its kind in the world. It represents a tremendous step forward in the manufacturing capabilities provided by Metspin, which already offers one of the widest and most comprehensive ranges of metal spinning services in the UK.
Over the past 25 years, Metspin, based in Hampshire, has become one of the UK's principal suppliers of precision spun components and is fully approved as a supplier to many European aerospace jet engine manufacturers, including Rolls Royce.
At the company's 10,000sq. ft custom built metal spinning complex, Metspin' highly skilled workforce has an extensive wealth of metal spinning knowledge and expertise, particularly in exotic materials such as inconell, hastaloy and titanium.
Tooling up to 2m in diameter and weighing several tonnes can be designed and manufactured. In addition, specialist finishing services are available, including laser cutting, painting and polishing.
