Refit Showcases Wealth of Engineering Expertise
01 Jul 2004
A recent major refit and conversion of a 50 year old, 58m motor yacht undertaken by Atlantic Engineering at the Odyssey Works site in Birkenhead, demonstrates the company's wealth of experience in ship repair and also in providing solutions to component renovation problems. Atlantic has a comprehensive portfolio of specialized equipment (lathes up to 17m between centres and overhead cranage of 25 tons), and its extensive engineering services include a metallurgical laboratory.
Extensive wear and corrosion to the vessel's combined configuration design rudder stocks and blades necessitated the use of specialist spiral welding and machining techniques to return the components to original specification.
The refit also involved the redesign of other components such as the pallister bearing and thrust shaft. The stern tubes required reverse engineering, the manufacture of replacement tubes, together with the manufacture and fitting of shaft bearing bushes. The propeller and intermediate shafts were fully refurbished together with the associate white metal bearings.
Atlantic Engineering originates from the repair facility of the Blue Funnel Shipping Line and holds major classification society approvals for repair and refurbishment processes. The marine industry accounts for 60% of Atlantic's orderbook. Other industries served include: aerospace, power generation, oil, gas, and petrochemical.
Atlantic's metallurgical laboratory provides support in material selection and testing, heat treatment, development of weld procedures and NDT examination. In addition, a failure investigation and expert witness service is offered world wide. Projects range from major hull structural failures to single item failures such as propeller, rudder or crankshaft.
