Foundry TechnicianWins Modern Apprentice

The winner of the 2004 Metals Industry Modern Apprentice of the Year Award has been announced as twenty-two year old Ian Blow, an apprentice foundry technician from automotive product manufacturers, Lincoln Castings Ltd, formerly George Fischer (Lincoln) Ltd.

Ian received his title, together with the prize of a laptop computer worth £1,000, at The Court Dinner of the Worshipful Company of Tin Plate Workers alias Wire Workers who sponsor the award, in London last month.

The Metals Industry Modern Apprentice of the Year is designed and co-ordinated by the metals industry's skilled body, Metskill, to highlight the outstanding achievements and business contribution made by Modern Apprentices in the industry. For the winner, it is intended to bring a significant boost to their future career development.

Ian Blow demonstrated outstanding distance travelled in terms of the skills and experience he acquired within his apprenticeship, and the judges felt his determination and commitment towards developing his career in the industry through overcoming obstacles, pursuing high level expertise and making a difference within his company to be exceptional.

This is exemplified by a project he recently conducted on a pallet scissor lift and identified robotic improvements that could lead to a £1.5 m annual saving to his company for just a £210.000 investment.
