Big Cups For Innovative Airbus Process Push Spinning to the Limit
01 Jun 2004
The Winward Company Ltd, Birmingham, has won a contract for large spinnings, which have a height: diameter ratio that is on the limit of what can be spun. The deep drawn 1m tall, 300mm diameter aluminium cups are required for one of the innovative processes used in the production of parts for the Airbus A380, largest passenger aircraft in the world.
Winward won the contract after it had developed a special process for deep drawing large aluminium components, and has invested in a projection spinning machine to expand capacity for this process.
The large cups will form part of the production equipment for a patented production process that uses multi-matrix composites in the manufacture undercarriage parts for the A380. The use of multi-matrix composites is just one of the technological innovations involved in almost all areas of the A380's production.
Projection spinning is a manufacturing technique that few subcontractors are able to offer.
Compared to other spinning processes, it is the fastest for deep drawn components, gives more control over material thickness, and gives a better finish.
Winward specializes in the spinning, pressing, laser cutting and fabrication of standard and non standard metals.
