Just weeks after engineering group PG Technology Ltd completed a purposebuilt 'EDM Centre' in Surrey, the firm invested in a new, top-of-the-range, 5-axis vertical machining centre from Mikron. The latest Charmilles single and twin-wire EDM and CNC spark erosion machines, bring the company's total EDM investment over recent years well into seven figures.

The company's SEMTA registration as a Training Assessment Centre has been renewed for the next two years - an essential requirement in order to support the necessary training needed to ensure that the company can continue to develop and grow.

Turned Parts Specialist Moves Without Hang Ups

On 16th February, CNC precision turning specialist Qualiturn Products Ltd, moved from its original threeunit site to new premises under one roof, two miles away. Prior to the move, it took one week to cut away hundreds of welded-on hooks and fittings at the new location (18 Merchant Drive, Herts), which was previously occupied by welding engineers. The whole machine shop of 16 lathes was moved and reinstalled in only four and a half days.

Automotive Company Saves Days on 5-Axis Programming

Basildon based Firstek Limited has achieved substantial savings after installing PEPS SolidCut Laser to drive their Prima 5-axis laser machines. Upon installation the most noticeable improvement was that of speed. A part that might have taken 5-6 hours to take from drawing to code can now be done in 2 or 3 hours, which over the course of a week saves about a day.

Balls Just Keeps On Growing

Although focused initially on tool and cutter grinding, these days Balls Grinding Services takes on any machining work, from production quantities to one-off tool making and everything in-between. From being one of the first in the UK to install XYZ's DPM turret mills and more recently Proturn CNC lathes, 25-employee Balls Grinding Services has progressed to two Vulcan 610 machining centres and its latest acquisition, a 9/12kW Vulcan 150 turning centre.

A new form of aggressive, localised corrosion has occurred on unprotected steel marine structures over the past 20 years. It affects structures at or around the low water level and is called accelerated low water corrosion (ALWC), lowest astronomical tide corrosion, or concentrated corrosion.

London Metropolitan University has recently established a Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) Centre specifically to help companies across the UK access generous subsidies and tax breaks to undertake strategically important projects and employ high quality graduates. A KTP is a government subsidised partnership between a company and the University, which lasts between two and three years. The level of financial support that companies get makes this scheme attractive.

Demand for Cut to Length and Blue Acetal Increases

Plastim Ltd, Gloucestershire, one of the UK's largest stockists and distributors of engineering plastic rods, tubes and sheets has seen the demand for cut blocks, strips and billets increase significantly over the past year. Plastim has won major contracts to supply cut-to-length nylon, acetal and PTFE billets, resulting in the company investing in an additional precision high-speed billeting saw.
