Polished Bronze Plated Shelf Provides New Home For the Arniston Stones

R.Wilson & Co Ltd (Zachrome), Derbyshire, one of the largest bronze electroplating specialists in the UK, completed an extraordinary job this month for the Scottish Parliament. The new parliament building at Holyrood required a prestigious bracket to display pieces of stone from the pre-1707 Scottish Parliament building.

The so-called Arniston Stones originally formed door lintels nearly 300 years ago at Arniston House, where the owner, Althea DundasBekker, has kindly gifted them to feature in the new building. The stones are to be placed above the main doors which lead from Tower 3 into the glazed walkway, which will be used by Members on their way to the Chamber.

The stones will also be visible to the public as they use the main glazed stairwell to the Chamber gallery.

Designed and fabricated by Jenning Wynch Foundry of Sunderland, the one piece stainless steel wall bracket is three metres long by 0.5m. It's size was no problem for R Wilson, which has capability for a maximum length of 4500mm and a weight limit of 1 tonne. However the unusual design required the drilling of two discrete holes to get the power to both ends.

Following a nickel strike, the component was plated with a bronze layer of 150 microns and then hand polished.

R Wilson offers hard and decorative chrome plating, zinc plating, and bronze plating. Specialist marine applications consist of a bronze underlay with hard chrome on top, which withstands 2000hrs of salt spray testing.
