Contractor Increases the Complexity of its CAM for Competitive Advantage

Since January 1997 LMS Precision Engineering created its own CNC programmes for its vertical machining centres using SmartCAM software. However, last year, the purchase of a six pallet Matsuura HP405 horizontal machining centre demanded a more complex level of programming. LMS called in Bill Payter of Keynsham Engineering Services to create the programmes, again using SmartCAM. Later this year, SmartCAM version 12 will be released; the first update since the product became unavailable in 2001.

in just two operations on two pallets, the parts are then 'snapped-out' of the billet and de-burred, this replaces many operations, and sometimes special fixtures, previously used on the vertical machines. This is all programmed and simulated on-screen in SmartCAM.

Despite the fact that SmartCAM software has been unavailable since 2001, LMS has remained one of the 300 loyal users in the UK; and one of over 7000 world-wide. The rights to independently develop, sell and support the software have been acquired from previous owners EDS by McKenzie River Software, which was founded by original employees of the company that first introduced SmartCAM in 1985. McKenzie River Software's first priority has been to overcome problems that sometimes arise with later Windows operating systems.

Bill Payter says: "We are delighted that this innovative and powerful software has re-emerged for a new generation of CAM users. There has been considerable interest from existing users and new customers at this news". Existing customers purchasing software maintenance (SMA) now will receive the new release as soon as it is available, and as a bonus will have 12 months SMA from the release date. New customers purchasing SmartCAM now will automatically receive the same.

Keynsham Engineering Services is the only UK company that has continually provided SmartCAM software, support, training and CNC programming since 1995.

LMS Precision is based in Worcestershire and serves a variety of manufacturers with complex, precision machined parts.
