Geared Up To Be Lean
01 May 2004
With support from the Manufacturing Advisory Service for the South East, Kent-based HV Wooding Ltd, producers of millions of precision engineered components and assemblies, has reviewed its company processes and introduced a number of 'Lean'manufacturing techniques to improve overall performance and customer satisfaction.
HV Wooding underwent a four-day 'hands-on support' programme using manufacturing specialist Stewart Barrass. The programme focused on set-up reduction and the need for key employees to gain a basic understanding of 'Lean'manufacturing.
A format was used to minimise the disruption to the company as well as enabling them to carryout more complex and time consuming actions between the sessions. Outcomes of the programme included an identified 38% reduction of machine downtime leading to a 10% improvement of on time delivery.
John Wooding, operations director at HV Wooding Ltd said: "We are a company that is geared to providing a comprehensive service from design assistance and prototyping through to the hard tooling and volume production for many different applications.
With the help of the MAS we have improved our overall service performance and maintained our promise of providing economic solutions to a wide variety of components and sub-assemblies through the use of a number of diverse manufacturing processes and technologies."
Stewart Barrass said: "The management and staff at HV Wooding have embraced the concept of 'Lean' manufacturing and 'Continuous Improvement' and have started their journey in an enthusiastic way. The commitment of all those involved in the improvement project of reducing change over time makes me confident that the improvements that have already been implemented are just the start."
