New CNC Turn-Mill Increases Efficiency

In October of this year, Metrics Engineering, specialists in CNC Milling & Turning, took delivery of the latest Dugard CMZ turn-mill centre. "Because of the built-in spindle, work that previously would have to be turned and milled on two machines can now be completed on one machine. This of course reduces set-up times and allows materials to be handled only once, substantially reducing run-times and increasing efficiency for the production of medium size batches of components" says operations manager Julian Sandrey.
The Dugard CMZ Turn-Mill Centre is a CNC universal lathe with a 30 degree inclined bed for chucking, bar and centre works. It has a highspeed built-in spindle that is very accurate and robust, equipped with 170 mm OD bearings and a spindle bore diameter of 73 mm for a bar capacity of 67 mm.
Based in the heart of Somerset and with over 30 years of experience, Metrics Engineering provides many components to the automotive industry, including complete manufacture of wheel hubs and ancillary equipment for motorcycles, components for centrifuge oil conditioning systems and components for hydraulic pressure systems. The company also produces parts for other industries, from security door makers to lifting equipment manufacturers.
Metrics Engineering currently operate 11 CNC Lathes (2 bar-feed), enabling bar of up to 400 mm dia and lengths up to 500 mm to be turned. With 6 CNC Vertical Machining centres (3 with 4-axis capability), complete machining processes can be done on site.
The company can handle a wide variety of materials, including all steels, aluminium, bronze, copper, alloys and plastics. Metrics Engineering also specialise in machining pre-formed castings. Batch sizes of components produced typically range from tens to thousands.
The company is accredited to BS EN ISO 9001:2000 and has received the prestigious "Federal Mogul Zero Defects Award" as a testament to the quality of its services.
