  • Oil Rig's Three Tonne Splitter Gearbox Shows Large Gear Capability

    Llewellin's Gears recently designed, and is currently in the process of manufacturing, a 3,000kg splitter gearbox for a North Sea oil rig. The company's range of manufacturing capability is one of the largest in the country; from 3m long shafts to 2.5m diameter gears. 

  • Precision Welding of Giant Steel Columns Uses Advanced Gear Units

    Advanced gear technology from David Brown Engineering, part of Textron Fluid & Power, is being used in the precision welding and positioning rigs in the manufacture of massive steel columns for constructing offshore rigs and wind farms. 

  • Rack and Ground Gear Volumes are Growing

    Mini Gears is expanding its production of small to medium volumes of ground gears, which are used in very high precision applications where noise and product life are critical. The company recently purchased a CNC grinder to accurately control journal diameters. 

  • Sales of Hydraulics Lifted With 'Passport to Export'

    Tewkesbury-based Star Hydraulics has boosted business by 24% to £1.5 million turnover following a major international sales drive assisted by UK Trade and Investment, the government body dedicated to providing UK companies with global expertise on international trade and investment. 

  • Turbo Alternator Set For Sugar Cane Steam Plant

    Peterborough engineering company Peter Brotherhood Ltd has won a contract to supply a £3 million steam turbine and cooling tower for a green power plant in Australia. Peter Brotherhood will provide a major piece of the infrastructure for the innovative Ergon Energy plant being built in Queensland and set for completion in May 2006. The contract is the result of UK Trade & Investment introducing the two companies in 2001. 

  • Addition of Specialist Gearbox Services will Add Value to Gear Production

    Gibbs Gears, based in Hertfordshire, has recently acquired the assets, customer base and specialist gearbox designs and patterns of Peterborough based Index Gear & Engineering Ltd, formerly one of the leading UK manufacturers of specialist gear boxes. The main business at Gibbs will still concentrate on subcontract gear production, but will also be able to offer a complete design, build and assembly of special gearbox units.

    Sligo-based Avenue Mould Ltd is celebrating its recent success in being one of the very first companies in Europe to achieve certification to the new EN ISO 13485:2003 quality management system for manufacturers of medical devices. 

  • Medical Sector Capability Gets Better Every Year

    Recent products manufactured by Amdale Ltd, Portsmouth, include rasp handles, offset trial heads, knee cutting and setting jigs (femoral and tibial). Amdale recently completed a big resection block project for JRI ready for the BOA exhibition last month, where the results were excellent. The company has developed considerable expertise in the production of medical devices since it entered the market 10 years ago supplying small and simplistic implants for the repair of ligaments. 

  • Seminar Will Discuss Medical Applications of Engineering Technologies

    Medical polymers expert Professor James McNiven Courtney of the Department of Bioengineering, University of Strathclyde, is giving a public address on the impact of polymer developments in medicine on 24 November at the University of Strathclyde.

    Using a technique known as diffusion bonding, Carville Ltd, Surrey, can produce complex manifold assemblies without the use of solvents or adhesives. This manufacturing technique ensures that "lab on a chip" type applications have minimal interconnects, are free from leaks and offer greater reliability.

There has been a 100% increase in throughput, coupled with 50% reduction in paperwork.   • Hewitt Pledges More Help for 20,000 Manufacturers

    UK manufacturers were boosted by £80 million thanks to the Manufacturing Advisory Service, according to new figures announced by Trade and Industry Secretary Patricia Hewitt this month. Every company assisted by the MAS has, on average, seen an increase in their added value of £104,000.

    Douglas Alexander, New Minister for Trade, Investment and Foreign Affairs, encouraged UK companies to 'get in the know' when bidding for US government contracts at a seminar on lobbying the US administration in London, last month. 

  • SMEs Still Waiting for 'Bonfire of Red Tape' as Growth in Regulations Hits Record Levels

    A 20 year drive by policy makers to craft proportional, consistent and targeted regulation has failed to deliver the better regulation that small businesses look for, according to a new FSB report published last month. The report is supported by findings of an Engineering and Manufacturing Alliance (EAMA) survey, that UK SME manufacturers are put at a serious commercial disadvantage, compared to their competitors, by increasing levels of administrative red tape.

    From 1st October organisations that don't have in place statutory disciplinary and grievance procedures will fall foul of the Employment Act 2002 (Dispute Resolution) Regulations 2004, says Mark Eaton, Director of the MAS (South East & London) for EEF South.
