£300k Investment Will Free Up Hands-On Boss
01 Sep 2004
Next month a new 9-axis Puma MX2000 turning centre will be installed at Richmond CNC Engineering, Devon. It accounts for the largest share of a £300,000 investment in two Puma CNC machines (the other is a large capacity lathe) plus tooling. The new acquisitions were made possible by a good six months of increased orders, and mark a significant upturn in capacity for the family run firm, which has a total of 19 employees.
"With the ever increasing problems of recruiting skilled personnel, the MX2000 will machine our components in one operation and will enhance our company's portfolio without upsetting the balance of skilled employees", says managing director and owner Gary Rich. "Once the MX is set and running it can be handed over to a machine operator.
Because the turning centre is machining more in one operation, the cycle time is longer, therefore, the operator can multi-task."
Mr Rich's role is hands-on. He has the experience and know-how to operate all his production equipment.
As with most family run businesses, the boss usually works 15hrs a day, seven day per week. The MX2000 will take the pressure off him personally without reducing production.
Richmond CNC Engineering specializes in precision machined components for a wide range of industries including aerospace, electronics, hydraulics, pneumatics, medical, microwave and defence.
Batches of 10 to 10,000 off are produced in most materials.
