Switch to 5-Axis Machines Achieves One-Hit Targets

The objective at Kencom Engineering is to machine complex components in one hit. The company's switch to 5axis machining coupled with a 'right first time' ethos has resulted in a significant reduction in machining times. Kencom took delivery of its first simultaneous five-axis controlled twincolumn Mazak Variaxis 500 in 2002.

Since then, a second 22 kW Variaxis 500 has been installed, together with three 22 kW Variaxis 650s.

Coventry based Kencom specialises in producing large, complex components, typically up to 10offs, and low to medium batch runs of production components for the automotive and aerospace industries.

Workpieces are typically sand and gravity diecastings that are machined into suspension, transmission and engine components in one hit.

"We've aimed to be in the premier league from day one, so we have always targeted the most challenging work, " says the company's technical director, Bob Williams. "In the seventeen years since the company began on this site, we have proved that success ultimately depends on two things - capability and turn-round times. So we constantly strive to improve our performance without compromising component quality and delivery dates."
