Following Fire Wipe Out, Production is Due to Restart in November
01 Sep 2004
Production at NiTec (UK) Ltd, one of the UK's largest suppliers of electroless nickel plating, has all but stopped since a fire destroyed the Derbyshire facility in the early hours of 14 July 2004. However, thanks to the enormous efforts of NiTec's staff, the firm is set to be operating in full production in November, at new premises.
Fortunately no-one was inside the building when the blaze began. The fire started in the middle of the six production lines that used to plate a wide range of component sizes from small parts in barrels, to single pieces as large as 20t. This capacity, built up over 26 years, was wiped out in a few hours. Despite the best efforts of a small, temporary, production line running over split shifts, current output is minimal.
Employees at NitTec are acutely aware that this event has not just affected their own business, but that of a vast amount of other companies, and are grateful to their customers for their patience and support. Said John Daley, NitTec's sales executive: "It is always difficult for a salesperson to turn away work and I hope I never again have to say 'Sorry we can't do it'".
He continued: "At least we know that this is the worst that can happen.
It has forced us to critically assess our systems, and look at ways to improve our services to our customers".
Currently at NiTec's new premises, which are adjacent to junction 29 on the M1, work is well underway and on schedule for opening in early November.
