Nitroblack Process Added
01 Sep 2004
Established in 1966, Hammond Heat Treatment (HHT), West Midlands, has grown to become the largest single site heat treater in the UK. The company has recently introduced the 'Nitroblack' process to its range of heat treatment processes that includes: surface treatment, through hardening and tempering, austempering, case hardening and induction hardening.
Nitroblack is a thermo chemical surface modification heat treatment process for production-engineered components in steel and cast irons. It can be used to impart wear resistance as well as corrosion resistance.
The process is designed for use in many industrial and manufacturing sectors as a cost effective, single process, alternative to the typical two-stage treatment of shallow case hardening followed by zinc plating.
Technically, it is classed as a 'low temperature, low distortion' process.
Environmentally, Nitroblack can be used to replace zinc, chrome and nickel-plating processes in line with the EU End of Life Vehicle Directive, which dictates that certain hazardous substances employed in the manufacture of motor vehicles must be totally eliminated by 2007.
