Fabricator's New Laser Increases Throughput of 'Cutting Only ' Service
01 Apr 2005
The 'cutting only' service offered by sheet metal fabricators Toolmasters has increased significantly since the delivery of a new Prima 4kW Platino laser cutting machine at the beginning of the year. It now accounts for as much as 50% of throughput on the machine, without prejudice to the cutting operations undertaken as part of the complete 'cut, bend and weld' service, which is the mainstay of the business.
Increased cutting capacity (up to 20mm mild steel), higher cutting speeds, as well as 'air cutting' techniques, have improved production efficiency and competitiveness of cutting operations at Toolmasters, based in Deal, Kent.
John Denne, of Toolmasters, is aware how the technology has moved on in the past year and understands the importance of machine upgrades for a subcontractor: "The new machine is unbelievably fast, especially when we use the air cutting facility for stainless and mild steel. On up to 3mm mild steel we are air cutting which gives us the cost savings get the cost savings of not having to use bottled gas."
Toolmasters started out in the toolmaking business 20 years ago, and despite its name has evolved into a sheet metal subcontract service with three CNC punch presses, six brake presses with up to 250 ton press brake capacity, and a Trumpf laser.
The company serves a wide client base that includes: Powergen, heating and ventilation, shop fitting, construction and automotive.
