Modern Plant Staves off Overseas Competition
01 Dec 2005
Hertford subcontractor Qualiturn Products is streamlining its production facility with the addition of two Star SR-20RII multi-axis mill turn centres. Owner Bernard Groom said that the latest investment will ensure that all of his 15 Star sliding-headstock lathes are now of top specification in terms of number of axes, traverse speeds and hence production output.
He commented: "Last year we lost three contracts for fairly simple components to subcontractors in China, India and Korea, but none so far this year. We make sure that our plant is very modern, allowing us to produce complex parts unmanned in short cycle times. It means that we do not have to increase our labour costs, allowing us to stave off competition from low-wage economies."
