Speed and Accuracy Rely on Programming
01 Dec 2005
Brighton-based Thomas Hatchard & Sons Ltd (THS) has a 60 year track record of success in precision engineering that is based on fast, accurate and cost-effective production of often high value, low volume components in a variety of raw materials.
Continuous re-investment in increasingly capable production equipment and facilities has also been at the heart of the company's success - along with its reliance on Alphacam programming software to meet its growing manufacturing capabilities and changing requirements.
THS is geared to the needs of the semi-conductor, medical equipment, marine, defence, vacuum and power generation markets. The company has more than 50 employees and utilises a comprehensive range of 20 CNC machining centres, with a maximum capacity of 2.5m. Alphacam-generated programmes are transferred directly to the CNC machines by DNC link.
"We can handle parts weighing up to 2 1/2 tonnes, although 1/2 tonne is more typical of the size of components we normally get asked to produce, " says THS's operations manager, Jason Pither.
"Speed and accuracy are the keys to our company's success, " notes Pither. "We employ very aggressive machining strategies, which are easily assigned as 'machining styles' within Alphacam. These enable a series of machining routines to be defined and instantly reapplied to new jobs. It not only speeds up the programming of families of similar products, but also enables us to standardise on methods and tooling."
THS has full CAD/CAM programming facilities with production being controlled by the latest MRP capacity planning system for just in time delivery requirements. A complete manufacturing/ procurement and test of electro-mechanical / vacuum assemblies in our Class 10,000 clean room is offered.
