Hexagonal Section Solves Special Spring Problem
01 Feb 2005
When a major manufacturer of seats for passenger cars was experiencing problems with the spring mechanism used to raise the driver's seat, it contacted William Hughes, Dorset, a specialist in bent wire and spring manufacture, for help with improving the operation of the spring. After considering a number of alternative designs, an innovative approach using hexagonal section was selected.
The type of material is not widely available so William Hughes had to determine a specification and locate suitable suppliers. By tightly controlling the manufacturing tolerances and specification of the hexagonal material, the new spring can be manufactured very accurately. This has resulted in consistent batches of products that perform reliably in the seats, and can be assembled by the automated machinery in the factory.
