A380 Supplier Chosen for Last Minute Addition

Following the unveiling this month of the A380, Airbus supplier PI Castings has been chosen to manufacture some additional cast aluminium boxes for the aircraft that will house electronic equipment to improve communications between the pilot and ground staff.
Due to the urgency of this last minute development, the parts will be manufactured using PI Castings' in-house rapid prototyping facility and delivered within three weeks.
Other components supplied for the A380 by PI Castings include various safety critical cast components in aluminium and steel alloys that are used in heat exchangers, de-icing systems, and also in the actuation systems, which move the wing flaps.
In addition to casting these components, PI Castings also carried out all the required test and inspection procedures on them at its foundry in Altrincham, Cheshire. These included chemical and mechanical testing, X-ray and dye-penetrant inspections.
