Long, Large Ceramic Components Needed Competent Controls

Turning long, complex profile components for the ceramics industry previously caused headaches for Scottish precision subcontract machinist, Dunblane Light Engineering. The two-operation process required separately turned parts to be screwed together. The purchase of a long-bed, Hankook Protec 7NB two-axis horizontal lathe has transformed the process into a one-hit sequence and cut cycles times by around 50%.

Managing director Andy Trombala explains: 'These are long, large components that demand a competent control system. We are not talking about shafts with two or three shoulders, these parts feature complex radii and profiles with high surface finish requirements.

The Hankook Protec 7NB was supplied by Ward CNC. It features a Fanuc 21iT CNC and dual electronic handwheel control.

In addition to its work in glass and ceramics, Dunblane Light Engineering provides metal fabrication services to clients in the North Sea oil and petrochemical industries.
